Well, I've been playing CF for um... 8 years? I think I started at the end of the first age.
Never had a hero (got to rank 46 once, back in the days they called rank 'level'). I can count the caballed characters I have had on 1 hand. Now I play maybe once a month, for a couple hours.
1st CF character: Jihad (before name rules of course) d-elf A-P made it to 26th, got sick of dying. I remember being is southern midgaard and seeing a thief 'step out of the shadows', so I asked him about the shadow cabal and got inducted! One of the people who killed him was Artemis - a human thief villager, so...
2nd character: Alannah (a name I used a couple of times since). She was inducted into battle at rank 25 or so, after 205 hours of playing (lotsa RP). She made it to 46th, and I had a lot of fun with her, and her shadow contacts (memory fails me, but probably do to a we bit of cross character knowledge trading with Jihad). She was a friend of Jaragh in the days leading up to the creation of the Knights of Thera. Had a few interesting run-ins with Twist (great debates about magic, with Alannah showing the imm no respect, and getting a taste of his magic). Later I made a bard of the same name, whom I wanted to get into the village, but they wouldn't take bards.
some time later, Kestrel - human ranger who became a knight (read target), and Orilliro - gnome thief of Entropy (still pissed me off that Pico took away my dopplegang shortly after I got it)
I rarely play anymore, but CF is an amazing mud - after I started with CF, I never played another mud again (well, Worlds of Carnage a bit). The well executed PK coding, variety in races and classes (each being unique), constant changes and improvements by the imms. When people talk about how great games like diablo, ultima online, and everquest are, I smile and think about the richness and diversity of Thera, and the years of tinkering and balancing that these new commercial games will never have...
*sigh*
