That would definately be easier to code, however you would lose a large majority of the uniquness proposed in my idea.. here are some of the reasons why it should be three cabals not three sects:
1) Three cabals allow for each cabal to be run independantly, with separate ideas and values. Avengers might war with the masters, but servants and the children wouldn't want anything to do with that war.
2) Three cabals allows for more interesting interaction between the three groups. Servants might get pissed at the avengers for killing masters, and withold the powers of guard and golden aura by cutting them off from the phoenix egg. Avengers might decide to make ammends or they might decide to get pissy right back and cut of the servants from holylight, greatly weakening both cabals because they arn't working together like they are supposed to.
3) Having three cabal that are connected by magic corrodors is pretty cool. Makes getting past NT without imperial interference much easier..
4) Can lead to cabals dying off and having to be resurrected. With three cabals it is quite likely that there will be a lull in membership in at least one of them at some time or another, perhaps resulting in the item being gone for a long time. That would lead the other two cabals to search for people to fill that role, as they would be missing out on some powers with no membership in the other cabal.
5) Children would be a lot of fun to play... they really would, and it would take away from the fun if you had to go running back to defend the phoenix every time it got attacked. With them separate from the other two cabals, they could be given a mean ass outer guardian, and a tougher inner guardian as they are completely peaceful (they wouldn't be allowed to hold any items, ever) allowing them to focus more on exploring.
See? Doesn't that all make sense?
