There are a lot of things in CF that don't make sense. This is one minor example of them. CF is just a game and isn't intended to be entirely realistic.
If you think about it, is there any way that a gnome or svirf (3-4 ft) warrior would be able to defeat a (11 ft)giant? Size is probably the most significant factor in a real fight.
We have to overlook these minor discrepancies, that is "suspend our disbelief".
