I don't think that graphical will ever completely replace text-based. Why? Well for one thing, it hasn't yet. Two, there's a strange phenomenon with a graphical mud, I tried to play EverQuest for awhile, and well...there was no roleplay. It was like quake with swords, and neat spell effects. Baldur's Gate is fun, but again...lacks something. So what does it lack? Imagination, or rather unbound and limitless imagination. The great thing about a text based mud is that you walk into a forest, and are given mental hints and shoves as to what it looks like, but it's entirely up to you to visualize it. Why do you think we get some cranky about descriptions? Probably the best thing I've ever heard said with graphical vs text rp environments was a freind's remark on EQ vs CF; "I dunno, EQ's fun for a month or so, then the eye candy fades out and you're left with a rather cut and paste cardboard world"...and for the record, what's wrong with thatched huts and black rats? Add a little salt....mmmmm tasty!
just my opinions,
