I am now playing an invoker, first one for me, and they are enjoyable, if you have the time to invest. But you are leaving out a few key things in your description of them. I will attempt to clarify.

Wands are great...this is known to be true. But let us remember, that their locations are still somewhat a secret in most cases. It took me making a mage, then asking for hints, for a long long time before I got to know where to look for them. But, wait, knowing where they are is one thing. What you have to do to get them is another. Some of the better wands are pretty well protected so as to keep low level players from getting their paws on them.
SO...Wands are great, but not all mages know where they are. And even if they do they dont always have them. (I know, "A smart mage ALWAYS has them." yadda yadda, but they dont.)

For the most part, invokers are at a disadvantage when it comes to facing battleragers. Spellbane blocks a great deal of spells that are cast at them, and unlike the other mage classes they have no pets, or forms they can rely on to do physical damage.
Granted, shields are nice. VERY NICE. But they do not negate deathblow, not in the least. Master invokers can take a few more of them, but they still hurt. And one of the forms of ragers has critical strike, and that goes through all forms of shields ect.

But invokers do have a few good points. Knowing all sorts of spells gives them a great advantage when it comes to strategy. They can exploit just about every races weakness, in more ways than just vulns. They can blind foes, weaken them, and set them on fire. And no, this is not just the master invokers. The key is to know what your spells do, and when and who to use them on. Invokers can be real fun to have in a group, at times, since they can dish out massive amounts of damage at times. Their shields are damn helpful.

But, as you sit there and piss and moan about their power, think about this.

My invoker who is only in his mid to late 40's is probably around 300 hours old. And most of my efforts have been put into leveling. So this means that any player you see that has a high level invoker is a damn dedicated individual. In a way it is a sort of reward for such patience to have some pretty neat spells.

My advice to you, to anyone who ever wondered how powerful invokers are, or thought they were too powerful, is to play one. Roll up one, and see how they work. One of the best ways to learn a classes strength and weakness is to play one. Now, when I face an invoker with some other dinky char I mess around with, I know pretty well what I am getting into. Learn what spells do, where they work, more importantly where they dont. If you do this, you will find that invokers are a tough class to play. I know that if I were a rager I would be much more afraid of a conjie or necro, or even a transie than I would an invoker.

Shields:Great
Spells: Powerful
Time Investment: Extreme
Against non-Ragers: Potent
Against Ragers: vulnerable
Newbie Friendly: no

My thoughts,

Elmaster
