If someone walked up to you on the street and demanded that you swear your life, heart, and soul to some cause, wouldn't you be a bit suspicious? I would think as a ranger, in a land where magic and such are real and common, you would not wish to swear a ritual oath to any political organization. And it never hurts to read "help Empire" before swearing all that to it. I know this is a common newbie error, but it always strikes me as one that someone would avoid if they thought about what they were saying.
