Isn't that from a Terry Pratchett novel? (suggested title list within):

Terry Pratchett has a large series of Discworld books, which are all hilarious in the Douglas Adams fashion. (Fantasy, though, rather than Sci-fi.) The first few in the series have been reprinted in paperback. Go get yourself the Colour of Magic (the first) or Guards! Guards! (my favorite) or any of the series. You don't really have to read them in order, but I'm a purist. *wry*

Terry Pratchett also wrote "Good Omens" with Neil Gaiman (in which Death also plays a role), which is also an _excellent_ read and highly recommended! Neil Gaiman, of course, has written the Sandman comics series. Also strongly recommended. *smile*
