Actually, that's not quite true. Macloclaon fled before he should have, as usual. I lost concentration on beast call three times before it went through and had no chance to wall. If the assassin had died, I would have fled, walled, and let my beast finish him. In other words, it wasn't really an instance of poor luck so much as poor planning.
