In Reply to: Fine fine, your choice is respected. Althoguh I personally have no problem with showing faults. Go ahead, post my mistake, Ulghrit maybe want to? If not brought to attention, mayeb we don't knwo our mistakes. posted by Kydan on April 27, 2000 at 20:13:14:
Yes, sometimes having one's mistakes pointed out can be a mechanism for self-improvement. But that's hardly ever what comes of that sort of post, so they're not allowed.
How about another hypothetical...
Let's say you lose link, but CF doesn't register it. And you're the only Arbiter in Galadon. And suddenly all hell breaks loose... let's say, someone in the AP bar attacks someone else in the AP bar. And to onlookers, it appears that this is happening right in front of an Arbiter, since they don't know you're linkdead. No flag placed, obviously, and eventually you void out and autoquit.
Then, when you reconnect to your ISP, cursing, you come check the forum, and you see the guy who died posting some long rant entitled "KYDAN, WORTHLESS ARBITER, BOOT HIM" because he thinks you deliberately ignored him. Other people chime in with comments not related to you specifically, saying how Arbiters suck. One or two people say "Wow, that's awful, I hope something is done about him." Your explanation of what really happened is lost in the massive thread.
People think of you as a bad Arbiter. They type who pk, see you in their range, and think "Heh, that's Kydan the idiot." Maybe an Arbiter Lord is pondering who to make an Elder, and maybe he doesn't even remember reading that post, but somewhere in the back of his head, something tells him "Kydan = mediocre lawman" and so you're overlooked.
And so forth. I don't think this is something you'd personally have no problem with. And given the constraints of the system we have here, there's no way to differentiate between the two types of "criticism," and no way to keep the bad kind from adversely affecting the game.
