I think there is another reason he vanished :

Someone has a few scratches.

When people see this they tend to flee and remove the flag somehow. This way avoiding losing weapons and/or armor. Since it was a low-bi fight he wouldn't stand much chance fighting special-guards.
But, that said, I agree. You did handle it well.
