The lagging commands will prolong the battle, but they won't change the fact that he's dealing a lot more damage than you are. I'll assume you don't have kotegaeshi yet, but against a mace spec (assassins can't use maces), you -really- need to get the weapon out of his hand. Dirt/disarm is cheesy, but it works rather well. One of you should have also given an early caltraps- it hurts his damroll, and lowers his dex so he'll dodge less. (He was mostly parrying here, but a few dodges happened as well.)

Lagging commands (scissor, bash, trip, etc) are only useful for preventing an opponent from fleeing or entering special commands. They won't help against someone who is beating you in a straight up fight.
