Every time I fought a FF I was able to defeat
it pretty quickly, so my bet is that earlier
is easier than later. Based on that, just hit
it with everything you have right on the beginning.
Second, you fled too much, and by doing so
allowed it to have some free attacks on you,
that's a no-no.
