An assassin isn't going to parry axes nearly as well as they do your staff and claws. Wielding an axe and a shield and not spamming flee like a nervous newbie may have found you making Shimae flee. Not carrying axes because 80% of them are too heavy just shows me that you're not well read in the art of pk. Hell, serpent striking with a practice axe would've been better than spamming flee.
