there are phylacs which let them see hidden as well. The mask is just a handy tool so that he doesn't have to gather up shit loads of detect hidden phylacs. Kinda like a tranny using a monk's robe or gills of the sahaugin for water breathing, so he doesn't have to piss with casting the spell all the time.
