Age.. A giant is typically over a 100 at rank 1.
A human is at least 18 I think.. by that age, youve heard rumours, youve stepped out of your house/cave.

You also dropped off in mudschool, which you can learn alot from... and given maps.

You can always say, "Ive heard rumours that somewhere over there.." etc
