When Nepenthe said that, he was looking at logs of Imbrogno, with a 17 int, just getting trashed over and over by fiends and saying,
"It's hopeless! There's nothing I can do! Look!"
And I think he meant that Imbrogno was looking at the wrong reasons for his death. Meaning there were things Imbrogno could have done prior or perhaps even during the fiend not directly relating to killing it or defending against it, that would allow Imbrogno to deal with the fiends out there.
Do you know what I mean? Sometimes we think too literally, we see a fight on the game, and wonder how we could have done a different direct assault, when perhaps the answer is far less literal or direct.
In Wanievre's case, I'm guessing that utilizing protects, and perhaps even recalling to heal heal at his healer, he would have beat the shit out of that fiend. (Thinking outside the box in this case would mean, have protects on your person, have recall potions, have gold to utilize healers).
But I'm not Nepenthe. I'm just a problem solver.
