The darkened trail, already nearly invisible, comes to a complete end as
you descend into the still and unlit valley. The land spreads out before
you into softly rolling hills, and you can hear the sounds of nocturnal
animals as they move through the brush, but you see nothing. The stout oaks
and ironwoods that dot the landscape rise up to block out what little light
might filter through from the moon, standing like mute sentinels guarding
the greater forests beyond. One constant sound is the burbling of a stream
as tumbles along its shallow bed and flows deeper into the valley. The
flowers are all closed, and the only scents in the air are the damp earth
and the wholesome smell of plants decaying into fertilizer. Despite the
near-total darkness of the night, the gloom is not threatening or daunting;
instead, it provides a welcome place of quiet and solitude.
