I think the main comment I have about this is that a lot of the humor around 58+ immortals is bitter, jaded, and caustic. It's not hard to slip into. The conversation you quote from (assuming it's a real conversation -- I couldn't prove it one way or the other) is easily believable but also needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I seriously doubt Istendil made a run for the shield in question, I have no memory whatsoever of him ever sitting in Hell ambushing other parties, and his RoA comment is merely amusing. I recognize it as humor. Whether you do or don't is debatable.
Now, why would they mock Graatch like that (you probably already know the answer)? That he was imm'd once was a mistake; he was probably singlehandedly the most annoying immortal we've ever had since he almost never shut up (and was thus the target of many a Cador rant). That he was imm'd twice... well, that's still one of the biggest jokes in the CF pantheon. Benefit of the doubt, maturing with time, the usual crock. Suffice it to say there is a great deal of embarrassment about even considering it the second time.
