Considering the fact that when you 'speak' on a mud, you are allowing your words to be copied and disseminated to everyone in a 'room'. I can think of a number of instances where things similar to that are completly free use. And, in any instance, the doctrine of fair use allows the use of excerpts from a conversation or body of speech for use in illustrating a point, as long as the excerpt is clearly attributed to the person who originates is, which is usually extremly explicit in a log. In any case, I would think a court woudl rule that the conversations you have on a mud who's express purpose is community/roleplay (as opposed to a psych test mud, or chat room type thing) would be considered in the public domain.
