Rot, Halt/Hold, Sleep, Insect Swarm, etc. are all fine non-damage spell-like things that are fine ways to initiate. There are a lot more, certainly.
You don't have to be "really damn good" to lead with any of those- in the right situations, all of them are "good moves". According to your advice, shamans should lead with demonfire over rot or dispel all the time. Sure, there are situations where you would use demonfire first, or wither, or energy drain, but it's foolish to say "never" use a non-damage spell/supp. It depends on what you need to do to win. Reduce strength to remove their weapon? Blast with damage? Cut off escape? Keep them from camouflaging?
Not to be Nepenthian, but you've made a number of posts lately where you seem to overestimate your own deathfullness(*), Grist. Let's not throw stones at log posters from glass houses.
(*): It's a word. Uncle Bob used it in an article, even.
