As far as bards, they're pretty badass with insect and wall, as would just about any class. sleep insect fiend and any damage song within a wall will certainly kill any giant. As far as down time, Sylvan enjoys the luxury of being the hardest cabal to get to and the easiest to defend. Its down time is hardly noticed because only empire would raid them. If you consider number of enemies that are direct enemies without declaration.. you will find sylvan to be rather safe.
