I remember hearing Galadriel talk about the save command. There's basically two timers, one is the autosave timer, one is the manual save timer.
For the autosave timer, it goes off I believe every 15 minutes, or 15 minutes after your last manual save (ie, typing save).
For the manual save timer, to conserve the number of times a player file accesses the harddrive, you are limited to saving maybe once every minute (I don't know the exact number, I don't remember what Galadriel decided upon). I believe if you keep typing save before that 1 minute timer has expired, which is common for certain clients, then your character does not save. In fact, if you keep typing save too soon, before the manual timer has expired (again, somewhere around 1 minute), your character will actually not save until the autosave timer again kicks in, which is about another 15 minutes after your last successful save.
Confused yet? I don't proclaim to know the true values of the timers, just that this is how Galadriel explained it to me. So, if you have a client that spams save every 15 seconds, chances are you are not doing yourself much good.
