It's quite possible and well within Astein's role to "punish" people who are in his midst when he becomes angry. From your role it looks as though this is what happened. His eyes flared with anger and likely anybody in his presence felt the consequences. That's immortal roleplay. He's evil, he's a drow, and his panties are always in a bunch, so expect him to be "mean". Had it been a regular smiting(which would've indicated that you as a person screwed up, the heavens would've opened and you would've been smited by a bolt of lightning.
