....that could just be lazy prog-writing. Does the trip ever "miss"? If it doesn't, and I don't think it does, then it's not really the trip skill being called, but rather something else. It could just be an appropriately-formatted echo.
I find it difficult to imagine that it was intended for fliers to be trippable, much less birds who don't even have proper legs anyway. I could be wrong... you'd have to ask the imm(s) who wrote SM.
