I think what The Arcane is getting at is that if you saw him coming, you should have thought one of two things:

1. Fight.
2. Flight.

If you choose 2., run like hell.
If you choose 1., then act on some sort of strategy. Anything. Prepare through using magics? Strangle him? Dart him? Whatever. What you did was stand there and let him get the first attack in, and then proceeded to allow combat to pass without taking a single action other than that sneak trigger (which would have kept you doing nothing and wasted another round of your precious time to fight or flight).

I believe Arcane is suggesting that you weren't prepared in any way, and, if you are not prepared, you should not have been sitting in the assassins' guild while he was around.
