The imms have stated more than once that parrying is a weapon-vs-weapon deal, with some weapons being well-suited to parrying others (the typical example is parrying an axe with a dagger).

That having been said, I have generally found staves to be the best overall weapon at parrying, followed by polearms and spears. Swords are the cream of the crop when it comes to one-handed weapons, with daggers and whips being the worst.

Exotics are mediocre, and are a weapon class of their own. I can state with absolute certainty that exotics don't have "classifications" in the sense of resembling other weapon types, for game purposes.
