Something about area spells I don't understand. Please help.:

I understand that there are some area spells and there are some which targets groups. Just say that the Masters Tower is being attacked and there are Masters inside. Being an Invoker, I concentrate my spells on the golem. But I notice people coming down to defend. What should I do? Area spells now? I also have friends coming in to help me and are not grouped with me. How can I prevent them from being hit?

Is controlled fireball an area spell? What about iceneedles? I know cone of cold hits everyone in the room.

Would appreciate some help here.
