Because there were 2 other villagers in the realms at the time? As soon as the giant would've started screaming, I'd be up my ass in deathblows, bashes, trips, critical hits, and God knows what else. Besides, all they would have to do is engage the elemental, kill it, and then the raid would've been pointless. You really can't expect a single conjurer with only an archon to do much of anything, especially in the condition he's in.
