I'm not an imm, but I play one on TV.

Writing a role is exactly what the helpfile states... an additional tool for RP. If your role is interesting and updated when signifigant episodes occurs in your life, it is going to get you more immortal attention, even if you are unaware you are being watched. This may or may not lead to rewards later on in life, especially if you want something like a cool form, a vitality or regular quest reward, leadership in cabals, tattooes, or if you ever hope to some day become an imm.
Now, if you could care less about RP and don't give a damn if you ever get anything out of CF other than screwing other people over, then you're probably better off ignoring the role function. If you ever want empowerment, interaction with imm-controlled mobs, fun quests, or surprise encounters out of the blue, this is a good way to advertise your worthiness without being annoyingly pushy.
