I've had several different stages in my life.
As a newbie back in the first age (5+ years ago) I just made hoardes of chars and levelled them up to level 10 before losing interest and starting a new one (mostly ninja, since I had some idea they were the uberclass).

In the second age, my skills had been much refined, I had heroed 2 chars. Now my hobby was getting as many chars into cabals as possible. At one time, I had chars in every cabal at once, although I neglected them all and would rarely play them again. I also was trying to gain every tattoo possible, but this proved a bit beyond my grasp. My chars I played more than an hour a week tended to be very pk-focused, and I killed fairly indiscriminately.

Now, by the third age to the present, I can say I finally found a more meaningful way to mud. I have one serious char at a time, and play them exclusively for 3-6 months, putting an incredible amount of depth and practice into making them succeed. Of course, this has drawbacks, particularly since all your eggs in one basket tends to make you rather upset when you screw up. I found I also now lack perspective and knowledge when it comes to other classes. Even though I have heroed 11 chars over the years and been in all the cabals numerous time, none of my other-char knowledge is current and I am usually surprised when I pick fights with combos I am not familiar with.

IMHO, the best number of chars to play depends on your freetime and your desire to learn. If you want to learn to be "the elite" (not that I claim to be one), obviously you need to play everything to a certain extent and pick up the mechanics and quirks wherever possible. After that, and after learning about the various places/things in the mud to go, you can do best by concentrating all your efforts into one kickass char that stands out.
