Dwarves with a little bit of additional strength. When I think of dwarves, I think of short, stocky, dual-axe wielding SOB's who could tear down an entire tree with their bare hands if you talk about their mother wrong.

I also think Dwarven paladins are not a bad idea. In fact, I think a dwarven paladin fits the role pretty well.
