It's a holdover from D&D times.
the first number is how many dice are rolled.
The second number (the Dnumber) is the kind of die rolled. D6 is a standard vegas type die, d4 is 4-sided, d12 is 12-sided, etc.
So, 6d7 will give you a range between 6-42, with an average roll of about 24 IFRC.
