From what I've seen you revert back to the last time your (or the games auto-save) saves...Maybe a few minutes, maybe more...If you are in battle and the mud crashes (not you loosing link) it resets to that point. You may be in the same room, if with an Aggro, they may attack when they see you do something, or not at all...

The only time you might die is if you loose link, but the game stays up. Any mob (or character) that you are fighting, keeps fighting. Anything your group attacks, you autoassist (if applicable), so choose your friends wisely.
