Back when I was mortal (see I wouldn't lie to you folks), and leading the Knights I had to deal with it quite a bit, and most of my mortals still do to some degree. Most of the advice listed below is pretty sound, the two basic things are try to get them to realise to stick to character, and if they don't pick up on it...send them a tell. Anytime I had to help some newbie (let's face it CF is not newbie friendly) using tells I always made a point of saying ooc...ie:

Shokai tells you 'ooc: okay, to reply to me type reply *text*, or tell shokai *text*'

and would generally once they figured out communication point them to the helpfiles, which there are now considerably more of. Also the nebie channel was put in to cut down on a lot of this type of problem, but well...no system is perfect.
