There's a major difference between "damage reduction" and "armor class." The latter is useful for a few levels, the former is invaluable throughout. Having a low armor class does not translate to taking less damage. This is perhaps counterintuitive, but that's how it is. However, it IS false to state that druids have no damage reduction abilities. The reasons you mention happen to be wrong, however.
