The only reason is to make it as simple as possible. I do not even mind using "system time", since the actual expression cannot be confused with anything else, and does it really reduce RP? I guess not.

If things seem too easy for you, I can also suggest that you, instead of reading books directly, put them in scanner, then into text recognition, then have speech generation read them for you. The overall amount of trouble will be about the same.
