Okay, Of all my four characters in my short lived history of CF, only one has been a hero. I pretty much sucked and con died, but I must say I found the game a hell of a lot more fun at the hero level. So this would be my reasoning behind the whole "It sucks to delete a hero" philosophy. I do however see your point and its a point well taken. Perhaps I just need a few more heroes to change my views ;)
