My problem is that you are expected to pledge your soul to the Empire.

Think about that for a second. You are a newly Empowered Shaman. The ecstasy of being the presence of your deity is still fresh in your mind. I often equate it with the Forsaken being called to the Bore in WOT. The last thing you would do is pledge your soul to some earthly organization.

You could argue that you can just lie and your deity will forgive you, but any dark god that forgives isn't worth his/her weight in evilness. :P

Just my thoughts.
