Such text-based games would be relatively easy to code, but why login to the mud to play chess when 1) it will do absolutely nothing to further your character's abilities or equipment, 2) your life will be in jeopardy with the huge "kill me" sign that you wear while absorbed in a game, 3) it's not doing anything to further roleplaying or interaction. Whoa. Check out an rp mud that has chess implemented, and I think you'll see that it's a fun thing to have.
I disagree. Having something to do other than go kill mobs for 3l33t eq or spamming "flyto, murder" or going ranking in the FoN can only create more avenues for interaction. Your points (1) and (2) have absolutely nothing to do with roleplaying. Nothing. At all. I can imagine Masters in the tower, discussing the intricacies of their spellcraft over a good game of chess, or the Emperor challenging a lackey to a game, which the lackey had DAMN WELL BETTER lose.
