You can commune it on any item you have in inventory only.
So communning 'transmute metal to wood' on bronze golem would not work :-) It is not like stoneshatter.

If item was not made from metal it would say it so.
If it was made from metal four things could happend :
1) Faulture. It can simply shatter in process of transmutation.
2) Partual success. Item reminds but it's aspects are worsend.
3) Complete success. Item just changes metal it was made to wood.
4) Complete success + imporve. (rare) Item's quality is improved.

Moon phase strongly affects what would happen as well as duration before you can transmute next item.

PS Also I found it funny as druid what if you are failing to bless weapon of 55th level while you are 11th rank 100 times in row it does not mean you could not do it.
