Each time you kill someone when you have your unholy weapon in your hand you have a chance (I think it is not 100%, but not sure) to get a new charge on it. One charge is either +1 +1 hit/dam or +10 +10 hp/mana. You can easily count the charges on it if you identify it. When the weapon is sacrificed you get 50 * (charges + 1) damage, I think this is the damage formula.
