My best advice if you are fairly new here (and by your note, I am guessing you are), avoid mages. Unless you are content with camping in your guild, inexperienced mages have a very very hard and short life. AP's are a better choice, since they can actually fight, and have fair combat spells to round them out.
If you must play a mage, stick with a transmuter while you are learning more about the mud. Fly saves you from most people who can sneak up on you, everybody wants you in their group for haste. Grouping is extremely boring for transmuters though, since you are so limited until you get shapeshift.
All other mages need to be extremely crafty, or pour a ton of time into practicing just to be considered mediocre groupmates at best.
