Regarding the conflict and discussion of liches, I believe the Immortals have the right of it. There needs to be a great evil in the land Many of the stories of myth, legend and fantasy are based around such things. This 'adversay' rose to power through the ranks to become a mythological figure (e.g., lich) which inspires terror and awe among the populace of Thera
The lich provides a focus for lightwalkers who stand true in their beliefs as something to combat. It affords groups the opportunity to work together to bring the lich to ground or allows the lone would-be heroine a chance to test themselves against the Left Hand of Evil.
Liches are designed to be tough, they are a foil...a tool to move the story that is Thera along. When a lich is brought down, by mob or by hero/heroine, it will be spoken about in times to come. "I remember when..."
