Why don't you ask a Buddist monk sometime what body conditioning, and the ability to move and control your body, has to do with the minds ability to change your body.

Body conditioning has been linked with the ability of the mind to change the body in more than one faith. And has much more than just scanty scientific evidence.

The idea goes like this, Through physical training (to include stretching) the Mind gains a more perfect concept of the physical form in wich it resides. This perfect picture allows the mind to change the Physical at the most basic level, effecting great changes.

In the real world this is shown by Monks being able to raise their body temperatures, and sleep naked on a mountainside in tibet at great altitude for the two longest nights of the year...without even shivering.

Is it much of a stretch that in a world with magic, such intimate knowledge of the physical would lead to the better knowledge of how to use magic to change the physical?
