Bards do belong in Battle. Yes, the effects of some of their songs might be viewed as "magical" by some, just like the effects of seaweed may. But, as in all things Theran, we have to take the game mechanics at face value as well as with a grain of salt.

The key thing about bard songs is, like you pointed out, that they affect the mind of the listener. For game purposes (of course, not real life) this is not considered magical. Try to avoid making real life connections with CF. There are many things that mirror real life, or the "logical world", but there are others that don't. Those other things are the ones you just have to accept. On that note, some characters/people will be able to shrug off these effects better than others.

As far as overpowered? I can say, with a great deal of certainty, that Battle Bards are not overpowered. Yes, there are some race/class combinations that they are more effective against (you can make this argument against almost any race/class combination, though), but there are other race/class combinations that are quite effective against them. If you think they are overpowered, I would assume you are playing one of those combinations that are vulnerable to them.
