You benefit more by summoning obscure sources of food and such. If you try to summon the same mobs everyone else does, there's a greater chance that you will be trying to summon and:
1) Someone else summons it back, or
2) The mob is dead or fighting.
So the trick is... punch up a list of areas that are city-like and poke around for sources of food, preferably sources of lightweight, filling food. When you find one, look at the mob, and note its "combat name" as well as any other names it might have. Now step two rooms out and try to summon it. Once you find one, keep a little log on your computer.
The same trick works for water, gear, and many useful bonus items like potions. If you kill a mob and it drops a potion, ID the potion, and see if you can summon that mob. If you can... all the potions, none of the walking from now on. Etc.
