The only time you learn is when you skills go up. Think of ranking as gaining respect in your guild. When your guildmaster see's you have have applied your training and skills and put them to good work, he will promote you. He will obviously think of deeds done by a good warrior to evil creatures as more then just some warrior that doesn't believe in anything but himself. Same goes for an evil warrior that goes and slaughters good.
Look at martial arts, grasshopper, you killed so many large guards in the past, you are strong and deserve a rank? You ever see that?
More like, grasshopper, you ventured into the heart of the evil fire giants and fought with courage and valor to elminate a great evil from the world, you deserve this reward, a black belt.
Now Mr Neutral guy. You went to the valley of the fire giants and just fought because you like too. While your skills are improving you need more time before I teach you more skills.
