First off, if you are an Arcane muter..perfecting shapeshift is just a painful load.
If you are a shapeshifter focus, then here is what happens....
once you perfect the shapeshift spell you get the shapeshift skill (which takes a lot less mana to use and maintain). Once you perfect the shapeshift skill, you have the ability to get the controls.
you get the certain controls when you perfect their accompanying spells.
control speed..slow and haste
etc. etc.
So perfecting all those unique transmuter spells is worth it.
because with the controls you can stay hasted/pass door'd/flown..etc while you shift and revert.
