You have to have empowerment from a specific god, usually determined by sphere (though not always.) However, you generally have to find thier shrine first to pray to them. Thera is a big place. If you're truly a newbie, I'd suggest you start with a "non-empowerment" class to begin with until you're accustomed to the game mechanics.
