On your race.
Speaking as a human mace spec...most of the upper end maces that I know about (and by no means is my knowledge all inclusive) can only be wielded one handed (allowing a dual wield or shield) by giants.
If you are going giant...well... I have had a cloud axe spec(one of the reasons I rolled a human mace). It just seems that upper mid quality maces are much more abundant than half decent axes...at least ones that you can get yourself.
Axe is almost all str based while mace it seems to me has a bit of dex thrown into the picture, but it is still mainly strength base as well(ie. my human not lagging anyone with cranial, Cloud giants lagging people with cranial, my human getting 2-3 full drumms in the 4 months I have been using it, cloud giants getting full ones left and right)
I personally like Mace better...for it is a bit more utilitarian.
1)Damage moves with drum bone backh
2)fast jablike strikes with backh that hit HARD
3)Eq destruction
4)massive str and dex reduction.
5)5%(or less) chance at knocking someone cold with cranial.
6)If you are a giant, lagging them with cranial
For axe you get
1) just straight up damage.
2) minor str/dex reduction with whirl
3) weaponbreaker has a more immediate effect on the outcome of pk situations
4) lag move with pincer
5) overhead rarely does more damage than whirl, and doesnt hit as often
6) disembowl can really help in a pk when perfected (how many times have they gotten away at writhing or convulsing?)
If human, I would go axe, if giant I would go mace....but that is just my opinion
